The World's Biggest Chili Cookoff The International Chili Society is the host for the biggest chili cookoffs in the world. Headquartered in San Juan Capistrano, CA, the ICS attracks the best chili cooks from around the globe who compete for thousands of dollars in prize money. The ICS) is a non-profit organization that endorses chili cookoffs with judging and cooking rules & regulations. These events happen just about everywhere and benefit charities or non-profit organizations. The folks that participate either by cooking or as judges are called Chiliheads. There are thousands of member Chiliheads globally who cooperate to promote, develop and improve the preparation and appreciation of "True Chili". During the 2006 chili year, from Oct. 1, 2005 to Sept. 30, 2006, the ICS events raised a whoppong $1,025,837.00 plus for various charities. This money was raised at 200 cookoffs with over one million participants. There are 3 categories in which a Chilihead can compete: Red (traditional red chili), Chili Verde (green chili) and Salsa. The ICS annually crowns a World Champion in each category. The ICS has specific rules and regulations for the cookoffs. Judges vote for the chili they like best based on good flavor, texture of the meat, consistency, blend of spices, aroma, and color. Chili cookoffs have become major events in the United States and several foreign countries, thanks to the efforts of all Cookoff Chairpersons. Over $75,000,000 has been raised for charities by the ICS. Anyone interested in holding an event will be provided with the necessary information, sanctioning application, forms, banners, supplies and administrative help by the ICS. The 2007 World Champion is Jerry Buma for his Booma’s Revenge recipe for chili. He was awarded a cash prize of $30,000. Stumble It!
