Hamburger Contest

If you find yourself humming Cheeseburger in Paradise these days, it's probably
because it's time for the third annual Beacon's Best Burger Contest, which kicks
off today.
Start testing your recipes and toasting your buns.
The contest is part of Akron's National Hamburger Festival and it's open to all
amateur chefs who think their burger is something to brag about.
You can enter in one of two categories: traditional beef burger, and nontraditional
burger made from anything else. That's right; veggie, turkey, shrimp, bison, bring
them all on. Dress them up as fancy as you like.
We'll select a group of finalists in each category whose recipes will be printed
in the Beacon Jounal's Food Section on July 16.
The festival is July 19 and 20 in downtown Akron. The finalists will compete in
a burger cook-off at 3 p.m. July 20, live on stage at Lock 3 Park. Then, a panel
of judges will put them to the taste test and select a winner in each division.
Last year's winners were Patricia Knott of Medina, who served up a spicy pork burger
topped with a creamy chipotle sauce, and Stephanie Yost of Akron, who also used
chipotle peppers inside and outside of her traditional beef burger.
Each winner will receive $100, an engraved plaque and a gift basket of festival
goodies and, of course, bragging rights.
